- “Get in my belly!” Prior to the move, start chowing down on your perishable food. While you may be tempted to go out and feast at Buffalo Wild Wings or Olive Garden, stay in with the family and enjoy a home-cooked meal. It is easier to eat it now than to move it later.
- Trash what is not wanted. We all have different foods in our refrigerators that we really don't care for. Maybe you bought something to experiment with and then lost the taste for it. Happens often enough. These foods and other food that you simply do not need can be thrown away. There is no sense in taking old food products to your new home. You will probably just end up throwing it away once you get there.
- Families Helping Families. If you cannot finish all of your food and cannot let yourself throw away perfectly edible products, donating food is never a wrong way to go. Families Helping Families is an example of a non-profit organization that will give your food to families in need. They will come to your home with boxes and pack the food that is being donated and ship it to wherever that needy family may be.
Moving Your Food
- A cooler and ice is all you need. If your move if only taking you a few hours away, you can unpack your freezer and refrigerator and store everything in a cooler for your move. You can use ice or dry ice for this type of relocation depending on the distance.
- Be sure that you use plastic containers and bags to contain any spills. As a fail-safe method, put the plastic bags and containers inside of another plastic bag, just in case that liquid pops the top of a container or leaks through that sandwich bag.
- Put the frozen food on the top and the refrigerated food closer to the ice to keep it cooler. Make sure that you pack the food in your vehicle last so that it may be the first thing off and unpacked when you reach your new home.
Planning Is Everything
Once you have made your judgment call on what to do with the food that is screeching for your digestive system's undivided attention in the refrigerator, act quickly. Do not wait till the last minute to begin your plan. Eating all of the food in your refrigerator will not be a procedure that is completed in the span of one hour, and it takes time to find places where you can donate food.
