Put a Fresh Face on Your House: Painting Inside and Out

If you’re ready to paint the exterior of your house, time to take a refresher course on how to choose the right paint to use. Paint companies generally have several products for the exterior including paints and stain. Before deciding that you can’t live without a certain color, educate yourself as to the best product for your budget. This is one of the times that we recommend even going over budget because the price of the paint is almost inconsequential but the cost of the labor is substantial. You do not want to use an inferior quality product that needs to be redone in six months.

Your Choices
If you have just moved into your house and like the color of paint, you may just have to do a little freshening up and use only one coat. However, if you want to change the color completely and are going from dark to light, it may take a couple of coats.

Our research shows that at a cost of $55 per gallon, Sherwin-Williams Duration paint comes highly recommended. The reasons that it gets two thumbs up:

  • They offer a guarantee of no blistering or peeling for as long as you own your house. This is a phenomenal guarantee.
  • The application of Duration paint is easier and bonds better than most other exterior paints.
  • It covers well and is marketed as a one-coat paint that hides pre-existing paint and primer.
Exterior paints are formulated to resist the elements and fading due to harsh sunlight. Once you’ve chosen your paint, shop around and get reviews and recommendations for the contractor who is going to do if for you if you are not able.

Moving Inside
If you are also considering painting the interior of your house, you can get a better quote from your painter. The paint you need to use is up to you as far as quality, as there are fewer elements to concern you. Sunlight does filter through your windows but if you keep the blinds closed during the day you will not have to repaint any time soon: that is unless you are redecorating.
