Lawns can be sprawling or they can be a nice patch of grass. Regardless of size, you want it to be green and beautiful. American Van Lines has compiled a list of some inexpensive tips that will spiff up your landscape.
Lighting
Decorative stakes, rock lights, solar lights. It can really be striking when your lawn is set aglow at night. Use a single or rainbow of colors to accent the area. You can even show a sense of humor with an animal lantern, like a bear or a scarecrow statue holding a light.
Statues
No one has to settle for pink flamingos. Or any at all. Try an affordable statue that adds to the décor. Put an elf in a mischievous position beneath a bush. A couple having a picnic or a jazz musician doing his thing makes for an interesting touch. Be sure to place them out of the kids’ play line.
New Life for Old Things
Ready to toss an old rake or shovel? They could add a little charm to your lawn or backyard. Turn them into instant garden decorations. Placing them in a teepee position and letting climbing plants grow around them makes for an inexpensive trellis.
Tables and Chairs
If you have even the smallest space, it makes sense. Nothing gives a lawn a better boost then the possibility someone will sit out there and enjoy it. Benches and, naturally, swings make outstanding additions as well.
Faux Décor
If you have a long wall or fence, decorate them with a fake window, grate or vents. It’ll add a splash of originality that offsets an otherwise blank space. Almost any indoor piece can be moved outside as a decoration. See what’s in the attic or basement.
Animals
Though we don’t want them leaving their mark, there’s nothing like live creatures to give your lawn life. A dog running around, squirrels in the trees. A carefully placed bird bath or feeder is a great idea. Even the most award winning lawn can look stagnant without some life.
Fountains
Working fountains can really spruce up the environment, but even an old broken fountain can be used as a planter. Let the thyme spill over the edges and create an imaginative decoration. You can even place that elf statue at the foot and overall enhance the lawn’s appearance.
Don't worry, we've got even more tips on decorating your lawn coming up in Part 2 of our feature piece!
