Moving Your Fridge to Your New Home
Moving can be a stressful journey by itself, and when you add moving a fridge into the picture, the problems and issues that arise can seem even heavier. Although it may seem difficult, if you have the proper equipment, time and a few extra hands, then it can be done using the following steps.
Step 1: Get What You Need
- Scissors
- Packing tape
- Moving blankets
- Cleaning products
- Large moving dolly
- Permanent marker or labels
- Rope, strong cord or moving straps
- Time: 12 hours
Step 2: Clear It Out, Clean It Out
- Gut it. Perishable items can be given away or donated to different places. Pack up the items that you will be taking with you, but if it is going to be a long move, leave the refrigerated items behind. Don't forget to remove and pack the magnets and any objects that are on top of the fridge.
- Unhook it. Unplugging the fridge will allow the freezer to defrost. It will usually take at least 6-8 hours depending on the state of the freezer. It's best to defrost it overnight. This will give you time to wipe and clean it out in the morning.
- Take out the shelves. You may tape the drawers shut or remove. Once the shelves are removed, wrap them in moving blankets or paper to protect them during the move. Be sure you label the shelves appropriately.
- Turn off the power source. Once the power has been cut, wrap the cord and secure it, so it does not get caught while moving.
- Secure the doors. With a strong cord or rope, tie the doors closed. Tape will work as well, but be careful in damaging the surface.
