Moving? Do You Know What to Donate and What to Ditch? We Have Your Top 10 Items

We all know that moving can be expensive. Hopefully, you've been able to reduce your cost by taking a look at our American Van Lines reviews before hiring your movers. What are you paying for when you pay for movers though? Most often, you're compensating them for the amount of things they move and how long it takes them. If you've already gone through your things and determined that there's a few things you can do without, you've taken the first step to reducing the cost of your move. By getting rid of your items that you no longer use, you're taking away a good portion of your items' weight and how many hours it will taker the movers to move them. Now that you have all those extra things, do you know the best way to get it off your hands? Donate it!

Do You Know What to Give?
Giving your things to someone who needs it more than you will means that you don't have to go through the trouble of setting up a garage sale or selling your things through Craigslist (and having strangers come to your home to view or pick up the items). Most importantly, you'll be doing something good for someone else and that's something you can feel good about. Now that you've decided to get some things off your hands the right way, do you know exactly what you should donate and what you can ditch? We have the top 10 most needed items for charities all over the country.

Books
If you're a reader, you probably have more than your share of extra paperbacks lying around. Once you're done with them, why not give them to someone else who might want to have a good read as well? If you have children, you know that kids grow out of their favorite books quickly. Getting rid of books with characters they identified with at six years old probably won't have any bearing on them at 12. Most likely, they won't even notice that most of these books are gone. Don't want to get rid of everything? It's completely okay to hold on to a few sentimental reads for you and your family! What counts is that you're giving books that are in good shape to an adult or a child who would love to read them.

Food
Any local homeless or women's shelter will be thrilled to have your donated food. Most shelters provide meals for their guests and anything you can give them is extremely helpful. Most charities are happy to have non-perishable items and canned goods because they will last the longest. However, if you have more items that you'd like to donate but aren't sure if they'd be accepted, contact a few shelters in your area! Check out the restrictions on the foods they accept.
